We regularly undertake watching briefs, typically on smaller sites or where the likelihood of finding archaeological remains is considered low. This involves the monitoring of groundworks associated with the development. Findings are recorded as the work progresses, while enabling work to continue. Monitoring can also be carried out on standing buildings following clearance or removal of internal fixtures and can help further understand their historical development.
We carry out evaluation and excavation for a range of sites. The excavation of evaluation trenches is carried out to assess the archaeological potential of an area, typically following an earlier phase of assessment. Where the presence of significant archaeological remains has been established this would lead to full archaeological excavation in order to examine these in detail.
We provide a range of research services for both individuals and organisations including house histories and genealogical research. We also have an in-house publishing service producing works on local and regional history in a variety of formats, ranging from facsimile maps to the results of archaeological fieldwork, including that carried out as part of developments.
Details of articles and books published by staff from Greenlane Archaeology can be found on our Academia page.
We carry out a range of building recording and survey projects, from detailed investigations of complex structures to rapid walkover surveys of large areas. These involve a variety of techniques from hand-drawn 2D images to total station and photogrammetrically produced 3D images.
Desk-based and heritage assessments are often the first stage of any project and can take many forms, depending on the size of project. We undertake such assessments for a wide range of sites and have an extensive library of relevant material.
Greenlane Archaeology and its staff hold a large collection of local and regional archaeology and local history sources, including some primary documents, and a number of journals. These can be accessed through our research services or copies of references can be supplied as required.
We are very experienced in carrying projects through from initial assessment to post-excavation and publication. We carry out specialist assessments in-house and also have a range of external specialists we use regularly.
