25 Castle Hill, Lancaster, Lancashire: House History
No. 25 Castle Hill was constructed between 1778 and 1845, a single property of square plan replacing two smaller ones. The Listed Building details suggest a construction date of c1840, which would seem likely based on the internal details, although a slightly earlier date is entirely plausible. It is not known who it was built for or who the architect was, although the occupier at the time of its construction may have been Jane Berry, who ran a boarding or lodging house. There is no evidence to suggest it was built to house the prison governor, as suggested by the listing details; this suggestion seems to be due to confusion with a property actually housed within the castle.
